Luke 10:16-21

¹⁶ Whoever listens to you listens to me, and whoever rejects you rejects me. Whoever rejects me rejects him who sent me.” ¹⁷ The seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in your name!” ¹⁸ He said to them, “I saw Satan having fallen like lightning from heaven. ¹⁹ Behold, I give you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy. Nothing will in any way hurt you. ²⁰ Nevertheless, don’t rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.” ²¹ In that same hour Jesus rejoiced in the Holy Spirit, and said, “I thank you, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for so it was well-pleasing in your sight.”

Colossians 4:5-9

⁵ Walk in wisdom toward those who are outside, redeeming the time. ⁶ Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one. ⁷ All my affairs will be made known to you by Tychicus, the beloved brother, faithful servant, and fellow bondservant in the Lord. ⁸ I am sending him to you for this very purpose, that he may know your circumstances and comfort your hearts, ⁹ together with Onesimus, the faithful and beloved brother, who is one of you. St. Luke the Evangelist, companion and physician of the Apostle Paul, is the author of the Gospel that bears his name as well as the Acts of the Apostles, which together recount the life of Christ and the early spread of the Church.

Tradition holds that Luke was also a painter and is honored as the first iconographer, said to have painted the earliest icons of the Theotokos and of the apostles Peter and Paul. He is venerated as the patron of physicians and of iconographers alike.
